Education Loan Collection Appointments

Specimens from the Museum’s education collection can be loaned or rented to the following groups of individuals for reasons deemed appropriate by the museum education staff with the following stipulations/expectations. An appointment must be scheduled in advance to check out items from the education collection. You may schedule an appointment here.

In preparation for obtaining specimens, schedule an appointment, download, complete, and print the appropriate loan form and bring it to the museum.

Searching the Bean Museum Education Collection Online

  1. Open Arctos using this link.
  2. Review the terms, and select “I agree, continue.”
  3. Under “Collection” select “BYU:Edu.” 
  4. Type the name of the organism you are looking for in the box under “Common Name.”
  5. To only see items currently available for checkout, under “Part Disposition Define” select “in collection.”
  6. Hit “Submit Query." This will show you results for all items matching your search, both items currently in the collection and items currently on loan.

Expectation of care:

Anyone borrowing or renting specimens from the Bean Life Science Museum’s education collection will be held responsible for the proper care of the specimens. Any loss or damage incurred while specimens are in the care of the lender will be the responsibility of the lender. We reserve the right to limit or restrict access to the education collection if items are not returned or damaged beyond normal wear and tear.

This includes public and private school teachers, college or university faculty who are currently working for an educational institution.

  1. Specimens checked out must be returned to the museum within 2 weeks.
  2. A $5 per day late fee will be charged for each specimen not returned by the due date.
  3. In addition to late fees, a $50 fine per item will be charged for missing items.
  4. No more 10 specimens can be checked out at a time.
  5. A credit card is required when scheduling to pick up items from the education loan collection but will not be charged unless a fine is incurred.

BYU Students

BYU Students


BYU students (BYU ID required) must be using the specimens for an assignment in a class for which they are currently enrolled (faculty signature required).

  1. Specimens checked out must be returned to the museum within 2 weeks.
  2. A $5 per day late fee will be charged for each specimen not returned by the due date.
  3. In addition to late fees, a $50 fine per item will be charged for missing items.
  4. No more 5 specimens can be checked out at a time.
  5. A credit card is required when scheduling to pick up items from the education loan collection but will not be charged unless a fine is incurred.

Anyone who does not fit the above categories.

  1. Specimens may be rented for $10 each.
  2. All specimens must be returned to the museum within 2 weeks.
  3. A $5 per day late fee will be charged for each specimen not returned by the due date.
  4. In addition to late fees, a $50 fine per item will be charged for missing items.
  5. No more 5 specimens can be rented at a time.
  6. A credit card is required when scheduling to pick up items from the education loan collection. The credit card will not be charged until items have been checked out and returned.
