History

To foster knowledge in lichen identification, the American Bryological and Lichenological Society has supported an exchange program for many years open to anyone interested in lichens. (Societal membership is not required, although it is certainly encouraged.) In “ABLS Lichen Exchange: History and Procedure” volume 23(2) of Evansia (published in 2006) Scott Bates detailed the history and procedures associated with the ABLS Lichen Exchange. Please take time to read his article here.

Location

The exchange is currently housed at Brigham Young University under the direction of Larry St. Clair.
All correspondence should be directed to his attention at:

Donating Specimens

Individuals submitting material for exchange are requested to include a variety of species and not to overly emphasize common ones.

Each species donated should meet the following requirements:

5-15 duplicates (ideally)
Fully identified (partially identified or unidentified material will be discarded)
Label (printed on 100% rag/acid-free paper) not glued to packet
Label should include the following information:

  • location (major and local political units, longitude and latitude, substrate, habitat)
  • collector and collection number
  • date of collection
  • the determiner

Specimen package about 4x6in (10x15cm)
Samples large enough to fill most of the package (Samples may require pressing to prevent fragmentation. Rock and bark fragments should be glued to a card.)

Information about the donation is entered onto the Lichen Exchange Website.

Log into the ABLS website.
Click the Dashboard tab at the top of the page.
Click “Make New Donation” by the Donation box. A window will open where you can enter your donation information.
You will receive an email confirming receipt of your donation information.

Donations should then be carefully packaged and shipped to the following address:

BYU Herbarium of Nonvascular Cryptogams
Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum
290 MLBM
Brigham Young University
Provo, Utah 84602

Donors will receive an email after a donation has been received and integrated into the exchange collection. The member’s personal exchange balance will then be updated to reflect the new donation.

Note: If you are uncomfortable for any reason with this electronic option for submitting donations, feel free to e-mail the donation information or include a hard copy with your donation.

Exchange Events

In the past, exchange events have been offered once or twice a year. Members are now invited to submit requests through the ABLS Lichen Exchange Website at any time. An email will be sent out twice a year to remind members that they may participate in the exchange. We will notify members as we receive and fill requests via email. Specimens will then be shipped to the exchange member.

Members of the exchange are encouraged to donate specimens to the ABLS Lichen Exchange throughout the year.
